Mzansi Viola is a celebration of South African music through the viola (Mzansi is derived from the Xhosa noun meaning “south”, a colloquial name for South Africa and is pronounced with a soft M and the emphasis on Z - ansi). I’m proud to introduce Masebe’s “Trials that Trail”, a set of ten pieces remembering the Rivonia Trialists (1963-64). I commissioned this work in 2020 at the start of lockdown. Joubert’s 1947 concerto and Reddy’s viola music are brought to life in the recorded domain for the first time. Having known Hofmeyr and Stephenson almost all of my life, it has been a privilege and an honour to have the opportunity to record their music. I hope you enjoy my personal selection of South African viola music. The next album is just around the corner…
